INCREASE YOUR TARGETED WEB SITE TRAFFIC

Article from UK web promotion company NCS on how to increase targeted traffic to your web site

For most businesses, how to increase your web site traffic alone is not enough.

Your visitor traffic needs to be targeted so your site can work its sales magic to convert them to interested or actual ‘buyers’.

So this article covers some of the ways to increase targeted traffic to your web site to maximise your sales or sales enquiries.

1. Integrate your traditional company marketing, your web site and web promotion to get them working together

In particular, your web site should be the focus of your promotion and marketing to increase your target local, national or international market to it.

So ask yourself some key marketing questions:

  • Who are you trying to attract?
  • What are they looking for?
  • What can you offer to them?
  • How can you reach them?

Tip: Keyword research is vital here in understanding what your marketplace is looking for and how. There are databases and tools out there to help you but you need to select the most appropriate one and ask the right questions to get the most from them.

2. Content is king

Good material, designed for your target audience, is essential to increase your targeted traffic to your web site from search engines – and of course to converting traffic to sales. Use your keyword research to identify topics or angles people are searching on – then provide a page or pages on them.

Tip: Ideally you will want to progressively add and/or amend pages on your web site. This is much easier if you have a good content management system installed.

3. Optimise your site for search engines

Obvious perhaps but often badly done if at all. Recent research showed that 64% of businesses that choose to outsource their optimisation do not follow the advice of the web site promotion company they hired.

Tip – Work closely with your web site promotion company – the better they understand your business, the better their advice will be. Then follow their advice or at least understand why they have said it and implement the spirit of what they suggest.

Another Tip: Local search is becoming more important – Make sure your address(es) are on all your main pages

4. Pay per Click advertising

This is a major tool and becoming more powerful and flexible – albeit more expensive too as competition increases. It can provide rapid results for new sites in particular – organic search results can take many months to build up – and cover a much wider range of search terms than you may be able to prioritise in your site optimisation.

Tip: When you decide your monthly budget, try to aim high for the first few months at least even if you have to cut back later on

5. Link building and PR

These aim to broadcast your web site to achieve links back to your site. This should increase your targeted web traffic in 2 ways:

  • Visitors who have seen your link or PR material
  • You obtain a higher page ranking from the major engines and so more search traffic

Some of the steps include:

  • A good submission programme to web directories
  • Placing content on your site explicitly to attract links, such as information, articles, games, other resources
  • Obtaining reciprocal links with other sites with closely related site content – this is now believed to be less valuable than previously but still worthwhile
  • Issuing articles and news releases for publication on other sites – they will have links built in back to your site. This is strongly recommended but be aware of the work involved.

Tip: All of these require work and preferably some budget for admin fees. Be realistic – outsource the work and/or plan to do it yourselves over a period of time

6. Advertising and affiliate marketing

You pay to increase targeted traffic to your web site from other sites – usually through your own affiliate commission scheme or paying for adverts/presence. There are banner swap schemes too where you place partner sites’ banners on your site in return for your banners on their sites.

Tip: You can join existing schemes to reduce your workloads

7. E-mail marketing and auto-responders

These can be powerful sales approaches with the right target base. You can use email marketing to attract first time visitors but they are probably more important for repeat visits.

Tip: Be aware of SPAM regulations – using your own customer lists is safer than buying external mailing lists

8. Monitor your performance

This is often neglected but good monitoring can identify how to further increase your targeted web site traffic and maintain your sales performance too.

Tip: Your hosting should come with some visitor monitoring but this might be basic. You can usually improve upon this - particularly if you have a bit of budget to spare

9. Free consultation

Last but not necessarily least, we offer our prospective clients a free, no commitment, consultation on your company web site and promotion. So free lunches do exist after all……

Good luck with increasing your traffic and sales!
